Johann Baptist Wendling was born in 1723 in Rappoltsweiler in Alsace. Very little is known about Wendling’s early years growing up in a region influenced both by German and French traditions and language, but we do know that this area of 18th century Europe enjoyed a rich relationship with the transverse flute dating back to medieval times. In fact, Wendling’s natal town of Rappoltsweiler, now Ribeauvillé in France, was once called Pfeiferstadt (Fifer Town). Wendling came from a musical family, his father and grandfather, both named Jean Charles Wendling, were musicians of import in their own right. We have even less information regarding how Wendling became one of the most renowned flute virtuosos of his day as nothing is known about his formation as a musician.
