This release presents a diverse selection of guitar etudes, each chosen for different reason. Although the Paganini Caprices Op. 1 were not originally written for the guitar, they explore numerous aspects of guitar technique. Studies by the lesser-known English impressionist composer Allan Willcocks were chosen for stylistic variety and because they have never before been recorded for compact disc. The collection of studies by Matteo Carcassi effectively represents the foundation for the guitarist’s training. The inclusion of Villa-Lobos’ foundational guitar etudes requires no explanation, for they are as important to the guitar repertory as Chopin etudes are to the piano repertory.
