Manuel Saumell Robrero (1817-1870) is from a modest family in Havana. He worked with piano solo and then with Juan Federico Edelmann and the composition with Mauricio Pyke. Very soon he performed a great musical activity: concerts as a soloist, in trio (with violin and cello), arrangements, courses, musical meetings etc. But it is the composition of a small fifty contradanzas that made him famous.

The contradanza , musical genre and dance, is the Cuban version of the contradance. It would have a country-dance origin, but also a French one, with the arrival of the French settlers who, fleeing the revolt of the slaves of 1791 and the Haitian revolution, took refuge with their slaves in Santiago de Cuba, bringing with them not only the culture of coffee, but also their music and dances (dance, minuets, etc.). The country-dance is done online, a row of men facing a row of ladies, while the quadrille (or "vis-a-vis dance") dance in "square" (later called "quadrille"). The contradanza will soon be in fashion in the Cuban salons, but also in the most popular neighborhoods of Havana.

The contradanzas of M. Saumell are small pieces, of a simple pianistic writing, written with a great economy of means. Respecting the narrow framework of the traditional bipartite structure, the composer shows a rich melodic and rhythmic richness. They are remarkable for the contrast between the two parts. The first is still very close to the European classical forms, while the second, invariably Creole by the use of the rhythmic figures characteristic of Cuban music ( habanera , tresillo , quinillo ), must be played with a popular feeling. Luisiana is a striking example,

Manuel Saumell lived on the sidelines of the bourgeois salons of the Cuban capital, where the music was fashionable, borrowed from virtuosity and superficial brilliance. In his miniatures, he brings together a deeply classical writing and a strong Cuban national feeling.

In the arrangements presented here, the double bass has been treated as a rhythmic support, and if the pizzicato game is for the most part offered, the performer will be free to choose the game with the bow whenever it sees fit. We would like to thank Heidi Cecone and Veronique Robert for their valuable tips for double bass players.

The accompaniment of the guitar is often quite simple. We must not hesitate, as we have sometimes done, to vary it by arpeggios and chord reversals, of course, each according to its possibilities.

We can also add light percussions (claves) which will be of the best effect in the second parts.
