Still, there\u2019s no reason to be intimidated. In conversation, York is affable and approachable. His music is likewise engaging and melodic, no matter how complex. He\u2019s just curious about \u2013 well, everything.<\/p>\n\n
\u201cThere are so many things that are interesting,\u201d says York. \u201cAs a very small child I was deeply interested in science. Also, history. I\u2019m insatiably curious.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cI wanted to follow whatever fascinated me,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n
Which fortunately led to guitar, and, he says, beyond. \u201cOnce you have that window into music, your brain recircuits itself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
He appeared on 11 albums with the LAGQ and nearly as many solo discs, , as well as three DVDs, as a soloist on more than ten albums, two available as LPs<\/a>, and has published a three-volume work on jazz for classical guitarists<\/a>.<\/p> \n\n On a typical day he might be notating a score in the morning, making a MIDI file of it, then working on a piece of his own music. That could be writing \u2013 he writes music he hears in his head, and then he has to play what he\u2019s written. \u201cI have a new solo piece I just finished, now I have to learn it,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n His varied interests include not only music and science, but gardening and cooking. So, he\u2019s judicious with his time. \u201cThere\u2019s the garden, doing weeding \u2013 I have multiple projects overlapping.\u201d<\/p>\n\n While typically considered a classical guitarist, York says his musical interests are as broad as his interests outside music. \u201cI\u2019m genre-non-specific. Classical simply means using the background of maximum efficacy for music. So, you write music that requires it. Good music is a pleasure to play.<\/p>\n\n \u201cI don\u2019t want to be a \u2018classical musician,\u2019\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019m just a musician who\u2019s well trained in many genres. Twentieth century, pop, jazz, all genres are fair game.\u201d That said, among his favorites are Couperin and Bach. \u201cAlways, always Bach.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
