What Are Electric Guitar Strings Made Of?<\/h2>\n
Very similar to acoustic guitar strings in construction, the lower electric guitar strings have an inner core (mostly made from steel<\/a> or nickel<\/a>) which is then covered with a metal winding (wrap wire). String materials that contain a high iron content tend to have the highest output and a brighter sound overall. Electric guitar strings made from other less magnetically powerful materials, such as nickel and other alloy combinations, may not be as bright or powerful – however they are often favored for their unique tonal characteristics.<\/p>\n

Electric guitar strings have a core wire that is traditionally consists of a steel formed in a round core<\/a> or hex core<\/a> shape. With the lighter gauge strings, usually the 1st<\/sup> and 2nd<\/sup> B and E strings, the core wire is actually utilized as the playable string itself without any wrapping. On the heavier gauge lower strings, the core wires are wound or wrapped within an outer wire or wrapping. The wrapping is a process that is done mechanically or by hand for greater precision.<\/div>\n

Wound Electric Guitar Strings<\/span><\/h2>\n

The outer winding process that is most often used for electric guitar strings is called Roundwound<\/a>, consisting of a round wire that is wrapped around the core wire – producing a bright and loud sound. Favored by many electric guitar players for their low profile and comfortable playing experience, Flatwound<\/a> electric guitar strings incorporate a winding that is slightly more flat in comparison to roundwound strings. Flatwound strings are a little more gentle on frets and overall fretboard wear, and can also help to eliminate the common finger squeak sound when sliding from note to note. However, flatwound strings are usually a little more expensive in comparison.Some electric guitar strings can undergo yet another finishing process where they can be further manipulated by grinding down or polishing the outer windings. Half Round<\/a> electric guitar strings start out as stainless steel roundwound strings, then are precision ground leaving the outer surface smooth and “semi flat”. In our experience this results in a string with similar tone characteristics to flat wound strings, with a smoother feel like flat wound strings, but with a playability and response that is similar to round wound strings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Coated\/Treated Electric Guitar Strings<\/h2>\n
To help protect the electric guitar strings from oxidation and from the natural oils from players\u2019 fingers, many electric guitar strings are also treated<\/a> and\/or coated<\/a>. With this added protective layer, treated and coated electric guitar strings also tend to last longer over time. Cryogenically freezing the strings is another recent development in electric guitar string manufacturing, where the strings are frozen at a temperature of -320 degrees in liquid nitrogen, resulting in improved tone and longer life.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
