Description

Artist: Oleg Gitlin, Balalaika

Release Date May 22, 2014

Balalaika artist Oleg Gitlin was born in Leningrad in 1951. Already at the age of ten, he was drawn to playing the balalaika. After four years of playing the instrument in a city recreational center, Gitlin was accepted to the College of the Leningrad Music Conservatory. There, he studied under the acclaimed balalaika professor and composer Alex Shalov.

In 1969, during his third year in the College, Gitlin participated for the first time in a national student music competition in the city of Ivanovo. He won first place. Thereafter, he continued his musical education in the Gnesin Music Academy in Moscow where he studied under the celebrated balalaika artist, Professor Pavel Necheporenko.

In 1972, Gitlin was awarded the title of Laureate in the national competition of folk instruments held in Moscow. With the award of that prestigious title, Gitlin's talent became much sought after. He performed in cities throughout the Soviet Union and when the Iron Curtain was lifted, he began performing all over the world: in the United States, Northern Europe and Israel. His performances were accompanied by both piano and guitar and his soloist performances by several important orchestras.

In 1990, Gitlin released a highly successful record with "Melodia", the only music company in the USSR that produced such records, solely for top-rated artists. That recording included classical and popular music performed by the artist.

The inclusion of compositions written especially for the balalaika is a unique aspect of Gitlin's work, which is expressed in this disc by the artist's performance of compositions by Victor Yegorov and Simion Levin.
