  • Martin MA535 SP Phosphor Bronze Acoustic Cstm Lt 11-52

Martin MA535 SP Phosphor Bronze Acoustic Cstm Lt 11-52

    By: Alan Lebov
After trying dozens of different brands of strings I keep coming back to Martin phosphor bronze custom lights. They have a very good balance of playability and warmth and I find the bass to be a bit deeper with these Martin M535 Traditional Phosphor Bronze strings than with the SP MSP4050's.

From a pure tone point of view, at least on my Martin D-28, I think the Martin Marquis Lights sound the best overall. Very deep bass and sweet, not shrill highs, but (after 30 years of trying) I just can't seem to play the .012's as well as the .011's.

So for now (until Marquis PB become available in .011's) I find the Martin Traditional M535 the very best strings for me.

Hope this helps in your decision making process! :)

I love love love these strings. The basses have a beautiful ring and warmth, and the trebles are nice and clear, with great intonation. It doesn't take them too long to settle in after restringing. However, I often use a Savarez wound G string, no matter what string set I put on, simply because I can't get quite the sound I want from any brand of non-wound G.

Oasis GPX+ Carbon HT Classical Guitar Strings, Treble Set

First, let me state that I received these free from Oasis via a promotion. Got the trebles today and was in the process of putting them on when the high E string broke--nearly an octave below the desired pitch! The string was extremely thin and fine, and perhaps I got a dud. In any case, I started to put the No. 1 string on again--and again it snapped. I was not impressed with the sound of the G and B strings. To me, they were a bit dull and muddy. I won't be switching from my preferred brands.

I just restrung my cedar-top with these and I'm smitten.

I had been using Augustine Classic Blue, which didn't have as high tension as I wanted (and didn't know about the other series). I stopped using them because I kept getting high E strings that would warble, trying several different brands and sets none of which I particularly liked.

These strings are rock solid, nice and bright without sounding artificial, and incredible tuning stability. I used the clear nylon G string, not having noticed the composite one until after I'd put on the clear one (this set comes with TWO G strings!) I'm happy with the clear one.

For the first time, I have strings that might actually be higher tension than I need. I love the playability, but will have to build some strength for certain vibratos, ones that come naturally and easily with lower tensions but that are a bit of a struggle for me on these.

Elixir 11102 Nanoweb Coated 80/20 Bronze Acoustic Guitar Medium 13-56

Decades ago I compared a number of acoustic guitar strings on my Martin HD28, expecting to find them all pretty much alike. To my surprise, I found the Martin 80/20 superior to the other brands I tried, in tone clarity. More recently I decided to try various coated strings, including Martin, Elixir, and D'Addario.

Elixir Nanoweb were the clear winners. Both D'Addario and Martin increased finger noise dramatically. Elixir Nanowebs sounded the same to me as the original Martin strings did after about 5 hours of playing, still nice and bright but without the "just out of the box" brashness. Best of all, they continue to sound that way at least four times as long as uncoated strings, probably longer.

I have very non-corrosive fingers. When I'm playing a couple hours a day every day, an ordinary set of strings will last me almost a month, which is far longer than if I let my buddies play my guitar! Unbelievably, the Elixirs will last me a season. Better yet, when I let my acid-fingered buddies play, I don't notice string deterioration. What I mean is, the Elixirs work well for me, and seem to work even better for the guys with the nastiest hands.

Elixirs cost a bit more than uncoated strings, but end up costing considerably less because they last so long. And they sound every bit as good as my favorite uncoated strings! They also are clear winners over the other two coated brands that I tried.

  • Sor | Complete Sor Studies for Solo Guitar edited by David Grimes

Sor | Complete Sor Studies for Solo Guitar edited by David Grimes

This edition is okay - it's readable and once you replace the binding with a spiral binding, it's much easier on the music stand.
I've only had this book for a month, but the biggest problem I have with this edition is that the editor has put in WAY too many fingering numbers next to the notes in that it's almost as hard to read as notation + tab (I get distracted easily)
I can understand for some of the harder portions of the text that numbers may be needed, but they are littered all over the place so that you may as well just be reading tab. Also, my white-out pen doesn't completely white-out the numbering (it works perfectly on my Frederick Noad Book 1)
However, the editor has made good changes that aren't found in the original text, like fixed misprints, easier-to-read text, and shifting page positions as to "avoid awkward page turns." All in all, an adequate edition, but I think Brian Jeffery's edition may be better (he is the foremost scholar on Sor, after all).

There are many varieties of Pro Arte. I read one reviewer that didn't think much of this set and wondered why they are so popular. This packaging looks like the Pro Arte Dynacore, which I personally think are excellent, and I know many other guitarist really like. Maybe that is the confusion.

Wow! Very impressed with the tone and volume of the sound. Sounded sweet and warm with my Oscar Schmidt OU4 tenor. Yes, the strings are long enough for the tenor. Have tried many, but this is the best. I love it and will be sticking with this in the future as I reall think that it.mades a perfect match with the OU4 and my finger pickings.

I disagree with Spyros. I find these to be the best sounding strings on my Jose Ramirez 1A Classical guitars, both spruce and cedar tops. I've tried many different nylon strings over the past 40 years. I'm sold on these.
