Viola Da Gamba Strings

Johann Sebastian Bach, William Byrd, George Frideric Handel, Henry Purcell, George Philipp Telemann, and Antonio Vivaldi are only a few of the composers who wrote significant works for the viola da gamba, more commonly known simply as the viol.

The viol is played much like a modern cello, and has a similar sound. It was enormously popular after it first appeared in Europe in the 15th century, but was eventually eclipsed by the violin and largely faded from the musical scene. Today, the viol has regained popularity among early music enthusiasts.
