Cello and Organ Sheet Music
Paul Hindemith was in London preparing to perform his viola concerto with the BBC Symphony Orchestra when, the day before the concert, King George V died. The concert was canceled but the BBC wanted funereal music to broadcast in its place. It was decided that Hindemith would write something appropriate, and Hindemith composed Trauermusik (Music of Mourning) for solo viola and string orchestra in six hours.
Hindemith finished composing at 5 p.m., then was the soloist that evening in a live broadcast from the BBC. Surprisingly for a piece written under such duress, Trauermusik is one of Hindemith's most enduring works.
We offer a version that has been arranged for cello and organ.
