Born in Birmingham, England, Tommis started out as a folkie in the 70s, joining the world-renowned Ian Campbell Folk Group and being cited by Melody Maker as a “wonderful young virtuoso” before embarking on the study of classical music in 1979. His time at university found him studying composition with Welsh symphonist William Mathias and he has made North Wales his home ever since. Tommis has developed an exclusively Welsh repertoire of classical guitar music.

As a performer, he founded the Anglesey Guitar Ensemble, which won two national ensemble competitions before disbanding. He’s recorded several CDs. Tommis became chairman of the European Guitar Teachers Association in 2001 and helped establish the National Youth Guitar Ensemble. He also writes for all other media and his orchestral music has been regularly performed by the Welsh Sinfonia and the Welsh Chamber Orchestra.
