Antonio de Cabezon Classical Guitar Quartet Sheet Music for 4 Guitars
Spanish guitar master Antonio de Cabezón was – well, he wasn’t a guitarist at all. In his day – the 1500s – no one was a guitarist, as the guitar as we know it today had not yet been invented.Cabezón became blind as a youth, but the Renaissance musician overcame his disability and rose to prominence as an organist, as well as becoming a celebrated composer. It was Queen Isabella – Christopher Columbus’s sponsor – who brought Cabezón into her service in 1526, where his duties included playing the clavichord and organ, and he remained with the royal family for the rest of his life.
His tientos were a polyphonic form of instrumental music that originated on the Iberian peninsula, and it was through the efforts of one of his sons, Hernando de Cabezón, that the bulk of his father’s compositions were preserved.
