Francisco Braga Solo Classical Guitar Sheet Music
Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1868, composer Antônio Francisco Braga’s first compositions date from the late 1800s. His music is typically considered part of the romantic era, the same era as Beethoven, Brahms, and the Mendelssohns, though obviously never so prominent as any of them. He was no slouch though: In 1890, he was one of the finalists in a competition to choose the new Brazilian national anthem, and was awarded a scholarship to study in Europe, where he took classes with Jules Massenet at the Paris Conservatory.Braga wrote operas, symphonic works, songs, sacred music, two Masses, music for piano, different chamber formations, band, and choir. He is the author of many patriotic hymns.
One thing he never did: Compose any music for guitar. But that didn’t stop guitarists of the time from playing his music. The earliest known example is Spanish guitarist Josefina Robledo, who included transcriptions of pieces by Braga in her programs when she performed in Brazil in 1919 and again in 1921. Fortunately you don’t have to go to that trouble. Here are three of his pieces for advanced players.
