Manhattan resident Juan Calderon grew up in Miami after leaving his native South America. No musical snob, his music blends elements from his experience as a recording and touring rock guitarist in Colombia and Miami, and extensive studies of East Asian music inspired by interaction with musicians and artists in China, Japan, and Indonesia.

Both teacher and student, he offers lessons to players of every level, while he himself studies classical guitar with Mark DelPriora, chair of the Guitar Department at the Manhattan School of Music, where he earned a masters degree in composition. His students praise his patience, skill, and ability to tailor his guidance to the goals and needs of his students. He’s also an avid cartoonist, collects rare books, and describes himself as a food adventurer and long-distance runner.

Of course. That’s all great. But what of his music? Even a brief listen shows it demonstrates the beauty of the guitar. Best of all, it challenges the player and encourages at the same time. Kind of like his lessons.
