Franz Gruber Classical Guitar Solo Guitar Sheet Music
(sorted by SBM sort)

Everyone – EVERYONE – knows the song “Silent Night.” But not everyone knows the story behind the song. Shortly before Christmas in 1818, German priest Joseph Mohr found the church organ had been damaged and wouldn’t work, or at least hardly worked. Mohr enlisted church organist Franz Gruber to write music for guitar and voice, set to a poem he’d written two years earlier.

At Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve at St. Nicholas Parish Church in the small town of Oberndorf – today about a 20-minute drive outside Salzburg, Austria – Mohr played guitar while the church choir sang the song.

Over the two centuries since, the piece has been arranged for orchestra, vocal ensembles, brass ensembles and the like. Chip Davis built a cottage industry around Mannheim Steamroller’s version of it. Yet the original version was very sparse. Now you can check out the music the way Gruber, Mohr and Mohr’s parish first heard it.
