Fantasy on an ancient carol for massed guitars

The ensemble is divided into a Ripieno of four groups [1, 2, 3, 4], each of which frequently plays divisi. In addition, there is a Solo Trio [A, B, C], who should sit well apart from the Ripieno; their music follows, but is totally independent of the main rhythm. All harmonics are written at pitch.

This carol is said to be of 14th century German origin. A vigorous setting by Gustav Holst contributed to the Oxford Book of Carols (1928) has given the carol considerable popularity in England.
