Elmore James was a master of using the distortion and sustain of his guitar to create a dense, aggressive sound that provided the blueprint for postwar Chicago blues. He made a career out of the electric slide riff he used on his version of Robert Johnson's Dust My Broom, a big R&B hit in 1952 that went on to become a blues staple. -Rick Daigh
