The musical motifs, in their shape and movement, are suggested by the movement of water. The particular image is of each little stream meeting with others until finally growing together as a river. The structure reflects this.

Four separate identities (the individual streams) can be recognized, partly by a distinct tonality and partly by a characteristic metre, but all flow together in a continuity where the basic note-values may be subject to a little flexibility in performance but never really change from end to end.

Furthermore, in the final section, motifs previously encountered individually overlap to become interwoven. The solo part, in mainly light figuration and higher compass, stands a little apart, reflecting the surface of the water with its ripples and eddies.

“Watersmeet“ was first performed at the Bath International Guitar Festival on July 23rd 2002 by the National Youth Guitar Ensemble conducted by Richard Wright and with John Williams as the soloist.
