Composer: Georg Philipp Telemann

6 pages

Telemann was one of the most prolific composers in history and was considered by his contemporaries to be one of the leading German composers of the time. He was compared favorably both to his friend Johann Sebastian Bach, who made Telemann the Godfather and namesake of his son Carl Philipp Emanuel, and to George Frideric Handel, whom Telemann also knew personally. Telemann's music incorporates several national styles: French, Italian, and Polish. He remained at the forefront of all new musical tendencies and his music is an important link between the late Baroque and early Classical styles.

Telemann's Sonata for Flute and Guitar in G-Major is arranged from the original score for flute and violin (TWV 40:111), Der Getreue Musikmeister 1728 edition. In realizing the guitar part I have added some bass lines and occasional chords. There are very few changes to the original violin melody lines, keeping intact the close harmonies between the two instruments. At times the guitarist is accompanying the flute with arpeggios or counter melodies, when doing so it is reasonable to expand the harmonies or ornament the lines freely as long as one stays within the confines of the periods' style.
