My preferred choice of strings for my jazz box

B. on 6 May 2025 review stating My preferred choice of strings for my jazz box I have a carved top archtop guitar, and it is a challenge to find strings that sound nice both acoustically and electrically. After a bunch of testing, I have narrowed the search down to nickel-wound round wound strings. I prefer these to the other nickel-wound sets I've tried. Something about this set has a little less unpleasant high end in the pick attack and just a little more open. I've found my sound!
The major downside is of course the tension. I put up with it for the dynamic range and the immediacy of the note. You do get used to it although comping gets tiring after a couple of choruses. These also do have the problem where the plain steel strings have a brighter timbre than the wounds. That's nearly universal among stock string sets and not everyone thinks it's a problem anyway. I've been replacing the 13 and 17 with a 14 and 18 which does unfortunately exacerbate the high tension issue.
