Emmett began composing *Kilimanjaro* in the autumn of 2022, initially as a piece for electric guitar in a progressive metal style. In the summer of 2023, he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro with his father—a period during which he composed large sections of the work on a travel guitar.
The first movement, *Dormant*, captures the spirituality of the mountain as a sacred and ancient landscape, shaped by powerful eruptions that have long since ceased. *Active* depicts a fiery spectacle of Mount Kilimanjaro at the height of its volcanic past.
Emmett premiered *Kilimanjaro* in 2024 at the Saigon International Guitar Festival in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
