Galli G77-4 Black Nylon Tapewound Electric Bass Strings, 55-115

The item looks good, and I am excited to try it, but I am not ready yet. . .

Bought these on the basis of a youtube review that sounded good and touted them as 'flexible'. I put them on my Guild B-301, which is fretless, has Bartolini pickups, and a Badass bridge. The tension is much higher than I expected from a string that was described as 'flexible', and they did not flex; they are stiffer than the LaBellas I replaced.

Beyond that, they are peculiarly unresponsive. There's something missing from the fundamental; they are lacking in focus, presence, and attack such that even though the notes are audible, they make me strain my ears to really 'hear' them. Some of this is attributable to taste, although I think that if one wants to dial back certain sonic qualities to shape one's tone, that should be done down the signal chain, not at the source. The string should provide character and leave you options for tone shaping to refine that character to one's taste. These strings lack character. Further, even if I liked the strings, I'd have an issue with the G string; it is markedly less responsive than the others, and has very limited sustain.

These strings make me work harder, both to produce sound and to hear the sound I'm producing. They rob me of much of the joy of making music. BTW, I'm a longtime player of tapewound strings, so I know what to expect from them.

Strings are great quality. No issues with that at all. I’m not of fan of this gauge I think is my issue. I’ve been experimenting with tapewounds and these feel a little cumbersome coming from 105 daddarios. The E does a lot of smacking the fretboard and I’m not a fan of of the feel. But I think a lower gauge could be an option. I would definitely buy this brand again. My issues are not a result of anything the company did. Simply my tastes and preferences did not match with these strings.

These have just the right amount of stiffness for the plucking hand to maintain positive control, while still being super easy to press down with the fretting hand. With the right technique you can get some nice upright-ish bloom, especially on the E-string. One minor gripe is that the thickness of the E-string, with the addition of silk at the ball end, makes it hard to pull that portion through the hole on a vintage style bridge. You really gotta tug at it. That's not really the string's fault though......that can happen with any large-gauge string.
