Description

Geri | Manouche Gypsy Jazz Guitar

The idea behind the book was twofold: create a basic journey for anybody wanting to discover Gypsy Jazz and offer some insight into the Italian environment relative to the Gypsy Jazz world. This makes it much more than a classic method; as a self taught guitarist, I tend to give more importance to sharing and confronting each other’s musical experiences, valuing more oral rather than written learning. I see tradition as a steppingstone from which to begin a journey and composition never as an absolute arrival point. These are the items that I consider essential to move towards experimentation, and to propel a musician through the stimulating, and often hardship-filled road of studying first, and planning projects after. This is what I have tried to enclose and organize didactically in this book. Together with colleagues Augusto Creni, Tolga During, Jacopo Martini and Dario Napoli, to whom I’m united by deep respect and friendship, we have undertaken this difficult but beautiful journey inside the music of the genius, Django Reinhardt.
The style is so articulate, father of what today is called, with an ugly word“contamination”- if anything, music produces encounter and integration - and, in spite of geographical or political influences, it had to be observed from different points of view to truly be fully explored and seen in its true beauty. And if the journey needs to be taken, better to do so in good company.
