Nuvattuq - the words means "breath" in the Eskimo language - is constructed on two series of which one is a permutation of the other, a device with tends to favor certain intervals. It deals with the problem of a polyphony based on the multiplicity of the action, while seeking constantly to create the impression of two performers. There are two long sections, each with its subsequent development. Nutattuq was written for alto flute because of that instrument's rich timbre, especially in the lower register.
