Josip Slavenski was born in Croatia and spent the latter part of his life teaching composition at the Belgrade Academy. He is considered one of the pioneers of 20th-century contemporary music in the Balkans. Three Balkan Pieces is a selection from some of his earlier piano pieces, showing much influence of Bartók and Kodály, who were his teachers in Budapest. The arrangement for two guitars uses a wide variety of timbres that gives the music a raw, folk quality, which was the composer’s intention.
