Nakenbading relays the story of a late-night dip in the lake, in late November. Because such cold plunges evoke a certain Scandinavian flavour (well, to this Canadian, at least), the piece’s title and the titles for its sections are in Norwegian.
This étude is to be performed with the right hand only. It’s an exploration of many functions and techniques a good plucking hand must master.
In the opening section, Innsjøen, på en sen høstkveld, performers will have some choice as to which notes belong to the foreground or background. A strict respect of the rests for the basses (which includes damping these open strings when a new note is sounded) will deliver the effect sought. The downward run that ends the section, in mm. 36-37 should start very sul tasto and move gradually to a very metal. (metallico or ponticello) sound by the last note.
In Bygge seg opp mot, performers should plan the changes between a pronounced sul tasto and an extreme metal.; some changes can be very gradual, while other can be a sudden leap.
