This workbook for group classical guitar instruction was designed to offer an original and varied repertoire—comprising duets, trios, and quartets—that fosters the development of ensemble playing and instrumental expressiveness.
The duets feature melodies played on open strings, accompanied by the teacher, making them suitable for primary school students. The trios and quartets, for their part, consist primarily of very simple pieces—some parts containing only open strings—alongside a few more complex, multi-level pieces suitable for groups with mixed experience levels, ranging from beginners to intermediate students in both primary and secondary school. The pieces are short and can be studied individually, or they can be combined to form interesting suites.
Throughout the pieces, you will find various indications regarding dynamics, timbre, attack, and fingering; these are intended as suggestions for study rather than strict prescriptions. However, the primary objective is to provide pieces that—precisely because of their technical simplicity—allow for focused work on the expressive elements and musical skills that every guitarist should cultivate. Consequently, teachers and students are encouraged to make interpretive choices that differ from those suggested, or to strive to render the written indications in a compelling manner.
These pieces were composed or arranged by music education students at UQAM as part of a course designed to equip music educators with the skills needed to teach guitar within the school system. Many of these students are experienced musicians and teachers hailing from diverse backgrounds (composition, performance, world music, etc.), which accounts for the creative flair evident throughout the collection.
