This quite engaging piece for Viola solo sets out to express and highlight several contrasts both of moods and sonorities. In it one comes across shades of lyricism, aggression, anger, resignation… To achieve this wide spectrum of feelings and sounds, the composer makes use of unusual technical requirements (like the percussive rhythmic playing behind the bridge, col legno effects, and finger tapping on the body of the instrument). The work is dedicated to Pierre Henri Xuereb, who also gave its premier performance.
