Pyramid 525 100 5-String Banjo Strings Nickel with Wound 3rd, Loop End

Perhaps this review is more "specialized" than a typical banjo review, however if you like the mellow plunky sound of a tackhead minstrel banjo, yet play a fingerstyle banjo, and don't care for the rubbery, noodle-like gut/nylon string feel of minstrel banjo, I was able to duplicate this same warm and mellow plunky old-timey minstrel banjo sound from my 24.750" scale, wood-tonerim banjo by simply adding a goatskin head, a soft cedar-wood bridge, and a cast tailpiece. The Pyramid 525-100 string set finished this old timey sound perfectly, allowing enough string tension to use my three finger-style playing, yet still offers that warm mellow sound of a gut string minstrel banjo.
In another Strings By Mail review of this same string set, I see another player has also realized the 525-100 set can also warm up a brittle, metallic sound of a typical stock banjo quite well too. The Pyramid 525-100 set even surpasses monel banjo string warmth, which was very surprising to me.
If I may also add, although the Pyramid 525-100's banjo set may appear expensive, keep in mind these strings will outlast at least three phosphor bronze sets, most often more, and not one phosphor bronze set can get you even remotely close to this mellow warm gut-string sound quality. I can also say the Pyramid 525-100 banjo set are very hard to find, in stores, or online, which tells me Strings By Mail attempts to cover all the bases of your musical string needs, with very fast service I might add. I thank them for this.
So if you want to get a more oldtime folky/country blues flavor out of your banjo.......you may find the Pyramid 525-100 charming enough to wonder where they have been all your life.
