Description: Darragh O’Connell came to international recognition when he won first prize at the prestigious 2019 Antonio Marin Montero Guitar Making Competition in Granada, Spain. This fantastic 2021 instrument is built in the same fashion as that award winning guitar with a tight-grained cedar top and Indian Rosewood back and sides. The sides are laminated internally with mahogany in a style similar to that of Daniel Friederich. It features a 7-fan bracing system that helps to produce a very powerful yet very clear sound for a traditionally built cedar guitar. The attack is fast and precise, almost like a flamenco guitar. The sustain is excellent, even in the high registers, and it has beautifully full and rich trebles all the way up the neck. The notes are very even throughout, and the playability is superb with a sleek neck shape and low action. The tone character is traditional, reminiscent in some ways of the Granada guitars of Marin himself, but with thicker trebles. There is also a hint of modern tonal character with a strong midrange presence, though nothing like that of double top or lattice braced guitar. Overall, this guitar is an excellent choice for the serious player with its powerful and refined sound, superb playability, and lovely aesthetic.
