Guitar they are they played on: Jerry Garcia’s go to guitar with The Grateful Dead was the ’73 Doug Irwin Wolf. This guitar was curly western maple with an amaranth core. The neck runs through the body and is Fiddleback Maple and Purple heart. The fret board is Gaboon Ebony with nickel-silver frets with a scale length of 25”. The inlays were African Ivory except for the first fret that was Mother-of Pearl, a brass nut, and Schaller Chrome- Nickel bridge and tuning machines. The pickups changed over the years starting with the standard Stratocaster configuration and ending with two Dimarzio Dual Sound humbuckers and an SDS-1 single coil. Wolf was equipped with a five-way blade switch, master volume and tone and an (O)n (B)oard (E)ffects (L)oop and a coil switches. Jerry said this guitar was like 12 guitars in one due to the vast array of sounds he could get from it. He would go on to use it as the test guitar for MIDI experiments.

The aim for the sound of this set is to give players the feel of what Jerry used though most of his career. This string combination is based on the Vinci set that was on Jerrys guitars.
