Dogal R44 Traditional Vintage Flat Wound Round Core Bass 42-100

Wanted to try these as an alternative to Labella "1954" (heavy gauge) flats on my P bass, a US built 1962 reissue made in '93. So far I love them--plenty of depth and warmth without punishing the neck or my hands. A tad pricey but I have no reason to believe I'll ever need to change them.

These are fatter and warmer than the other Dogal flats, but they still have a dark and defined tone that I feel sets the Dogal strings apart. They are large but smooth and actually super easy on the fingers! I specifically love these strings on P-basses- when I want like an old school rock/soul/roots/country sound a p-bass with these and a tube-pre is my go-to. I get a lot of compliments on the tone from that combo

I've tried every type of flatwound string I could get my hands on over the last 15 years and I can confidently say that these are the best I have ever played. I'll compare them to 3 other sets that I have really enjoyed in the past: I always loved the sound of La Bella DTFs but I find to be very "grabby", which can make slides and other types of articulation more difficult than they have to be. On the other hand, I find some strings like TIs to feel great under the fingers and have these rich mids that are perfect for more expressive playing, but the tension is loose to the point of being floppy. Pyramids have a great vintage sound and a smooth feel for the A, D, and G strings, but the E (on the sets I've tried at least) has this weird rougher texture and sounds dead by comparison, to the point of being kind of jarring. These strings on the other hand have this perfectly smooth winding with a Goldilocks Zone tension that sits about where the light gauge La Bellas do. The strings aren't stiff and they aren't overly-flexible to me either; again, they sit in this perfectly neutral territory between the two. Most importantly, they are just stiff enough to get clean sounds with a low-action setup. Sound-wise, these aren't the modern-sounding jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none flats that a lot of companies are putting out now, they have that perfect vintage sound, similar to Pyramid and La Bella DTFs and Olinto sets that lean heavily into everything we love about flatwound strings. They feel perfectly smooth, they aren't "grabby" to me at all, the tension and stiffness are just right, and the sound is exactly what I'm looking for. 10/10 strings. I even ordered a 32" set for my Guild Starfire II that I'm eagerly awaiting.

As far as installation goes, these are round cores like DRs, Pyramids, and TIs, so *make sure you crimp* before cutting. I put these on a regular old Fender P Bass and didn't have to cut the strings at all, but that is something that you should be aware of. Also, the silks are this classic black color with this really cool gold wrapping.

These flats thump really good, I put them on my MTD Kingston Saratoga Jazz and oh my do they ever sound great. I was hesitant to try the Dogal's are they are more than the average flats, but once I put them on and started belting out some grooves I was instantly sold.

They are the best flat's I have tried and the only brand I will now put on my bass's. I have also tried the Dogal Jaco flats as well and they are stellar low tension flats. Overall I am highly satisfied with Dogal flats.
