La Bella Rectified Nylon .016, Single String

I have been playing and trying various strings for lutes, looking to get an acceptable sound, intonation, stability and longevity for 50 years now and have to admit that a good rectified nylon is as close to gut (in sound) as we might get from a synthetic. They give the tension you want at the high end without stretching to get to the final semitone. Moreover, they don't 'hollow' (stretch more at the center than at the ends) which gives a far better pure note without confusing, overpowering and unpleasant overtones. I recommend this kind of string for the first two courses and the octaves of 4, 5, and 6. Do consult a good string calculator (***www.niskanenlutes.***/index.php) for the correct gauges!

I tune my soprano ukuleles GDAE, non re-entrant, like a mandolin. This solved the problem of finding a string that could be reliably tuned high E. They have a nice, brilliant sound

I have these on 3 ukes for about 8 months, and and have had only one break. I suspect that the nut was a bit too sharp as that is where it broke. I used my fingernail to soften the leading edge of the slot and tuned up a new string. It seems OK, now.
