Bright, clear sound

Nice, bright, clear ring to the sound. Though the strings seem to have a weakness of breaking in difficult situations like low humidity or temperature drops, I’d buy again. Great strings to have.

Good but are they the best?

Expensive, of course… but if you want flat wound strings these are cheaper than the competition… whether they are better… hard to say. I use these, but respect the more expensive...

Q: I have D'Addario medium strings on my Kentucky mandolin. Would a set of Optima 3050.L be appropriate for this mandolin?

A: Hello Nancy,
In theory these Optima strings are appropriate for your mandolin however the gauges are enough smaller that intonation issues and/or buzzing problems could arise. If you think you want to change to lighter gauge strings it would be best to consult with a luthier first; this set is essentially an ultra-light gauge set so it will draw considerably less tension than the strings you are currently using.

D'Addario Light gauge sets would be a step down from what you are currently using but not as a drastic a gauge change as the Optimas; perhaps that is an option you should consider first.

Q: Can you tell what the tension (in kg) is for the strings? Are they suitable for a vintage bowl back?

A: Hello Patrick ,
Optima states that the total tension for this set is approximately 23kg. They do not provide a string by string measurement.
As for the suitability of these strings for your vintage instrument we cannot accurately say. Your best option would be to have the instrument inspected by a qualified luthier to verify it's overall stability.
