When it comes to strings, it’s all about tension. While gauge is simply the measurement of the string’s diameter, the tension of a string determines its relative volume to the other strings (EQ). String tension is determined by its core to wrap ratio, which can vary greatly among manufacturers. This can create multi-pound differences between brands and an illogical EQ within any given set.

Santa Cruz Strings are engineered to do what others cannot, to put the exact tension on each individual string to create the appropriate download pressure. These calculated tensions determine the optimal relative volume between strings, or EQ, for your instrument. Santa Cruz Strings require precise core to wrap ratios and precision fit and finish for unprecedented tolerances of one half of one thousandths of an inch. This accurately determines the tension/volume of each string to the exact EQ that your guitar was designed for. State of the art metallurgy and micro-coating assures long life by preventing corrosive moisture from contacting the core of these nickel and lead-free strings.

This project has been a decade in the making; commercially available strings were never able to truly complement the complexity of overtones and sustain that SCGC achieves by individually tap tuning and hand voicing each guitar. SCGC, therefore, sought out the wisdom of their friends and colleagues within the audiological sciences to collaborate on a new design that will fully drive Santa Cruz Guitar Company’s complex acoustic tone.

Sound great

After the break in period the strings sound natural and well balanced. The only caveat is that the package does not identify which string is which. I'm 74 and my eye sight has a hard time with the bass strings and to which is 5th or 6th.

Santa Cruz strings deliver exceptional balanced tone, good life. They have become my standard for all my steel string acoustics, 1976 D-35, HD-28 12, and a Taylor baritone 8 (I buy the octave strings individually). Strings By Mail is a great source. I buy all my nylon strings from them also.

Super cool strings w/ a Wound 2nd String

The Wound 2nd String reminds me of the great Eddie Lang, that means I can pay tribute to him. Eddie Lang was known for having a Wound 2nd String on his Guitar & now Santa Cruz makes something like that.

Q: Do you use these strings on a normal scale guitar but tune it lower?

A: These strings are made for baritone guitar which typically have a longer scale length to accommodate the heavier gauge strings. Standard Baritone tuning is B, E, A, D, F# b

Q: I ordered 6 sets of acoustic parabolic strings from Santa Cruz. They came unmarked, no packaging indicating which string is which. Without gauge distinction, how do I know which stings are which?

A: Hello Sharon ,
I suspect Santa Cruz expects users to be able to visually see the difference. Using a micrometer is a sure fire way to check the gauges. You might also try the spring test method- hold the individually coiled strings between thumb and index finger- the thicker the string the more resistance you will feel when compressed slightly.
