D'Addario EJ33 Folk Nylon Classical Guitar Strings, Full Set

I play solo fingerstyle guitar, usually on a Martin for live performance. After having some minor issues develop with my left hand, I wanted to see if a crossover nylon string guitar with lower tension would help. I got a Cordoba Stage electric and was very pleased with it, but not crazy about the strings..

I tried several different sets (thank you Strings By Mail for making string research and buying so easy) and came acorss this set...wow, I LOVE THESE. For someone who has been playing steel string instruments, even somewhat lightly strung for fingerstyle work, nylon strings feel very squishy under my fingers. Not just lower tension but just mush without the snap I like to feel. Silver wrap around nylon sounds great on traditional classical and flamenco instruments, but if you're playing a semi hollow electric, you really aren't going to be going for 100% authentic sound, at least I wasn't.

These D'Addario EJ33 Folk Nylon Classical Guitar Strings are as close to perfect for my needs as I can imagine. The tension is much easier on my hand, while still being firm and snappy under my fingers. Sound to me IMPROVED on the Cordoba when I replaced the silver wound with these 80/20 Phosphor Bronze. The plain high strings have a dry feel that I much prefer to the slick clear nylon often seen, giving me what feels like the perfect match for performance strings with the Cordoba.

If you are thinking about crossing over from steel string, or even are comfortable with a nylon string instrument already, you owe it to yourself to try a set of these for yourself. I can't think of anything that I disliked about them. Price is right, intonation was great, D'Addario is renown for consistency set after set, and they even settled in to holding pitch very fast. I purposely didn't manually stretch them just to see how long it would take. Overnight, they dropped less than a half-step and came back great.

I bought these strings to replace a set that was on an Ibanez Vintage 2813 classical acoustic guitar my friend had inherited from her father and gave to me to clean up after years of dormancy. I was able to identify the strings accurately and was happy when I put these on. I love the sound of nylons and these ones fit that guitar beautifully. While not having any other experience with this specific guitar for a benchline, I can't imagine anything missing, but will leave some room for my friend to find out on her own. The ball ends were good for easy changing (I have experience with tie end but usually don't opt for those unless circumstances call for it). The tone, feel, texture, and "looseness" were as I have come to expect from nylons. No shortcomings overall.
