Aquila Rubino Classical Guitar Strings, Normal Tension, 139C, Bass Set

Available in one degree of tension, it’s a set of strings with a unique look and a sound that you’ve never heard before. Until now, to reach lower frequencies, an increase of the gauge of the string was necessary, but in doing so, the sound quality of the string would deteriorate proportionally, because the internal acoustic dampening of the string is directly proportional to its diameter. This makes the string less bright, less responsive and more muffled: the thicker the string, the duller the sound.

Our revolutionary new approach — never introduced before — changes the specific weight of each string used for the trebles, leaving the gauges almost unchanged, as far as possible. The result is amazing. The instrument will sound brighter, more powerful and more responsive through the entire range of the fretboard, especially over the 12th fret. The smaller gauge differences between strings allow an improved overall intonation.

The RUBINO series provide high performances and are intended for musicians who love clear, sharp sounds and powerful voicing across the full scale of the guitar.

The affordable bass strings nobody seems to talk about

These strings are used as the bass half of both the Rubino and Sugar string sets. The trebles in both those sets are so controversial that the basses rarely get mentioned. When they do, many players simply can't get past that cranberry-red finish on them. But what about their performance qualities?
I have to admit I was skeptical myself about basses being finished with a varnish. I always thought that the silver plating was an important component of the sound quality. But these sound very good. They've become my go-to bass set. The red varnish will wear through at the frets a bit faster than silver-plating will, but I've never had the frets erode through the winding as I have with some other bass strings. Best of all, this finish minimizes surface noise much better than a metal plating ever could. These are really durable, good-sounding basses.

Which is better...buying more expensive bass strings and leaving them on longer...or buying affordable basses and changing strings more frequently? Let's suppose you have $100 a year to spend on bass strings. At $10.79 for Savarez Cantiga basses, you could afford to change them once every 40 days. At $6.99 for Aquila Rubino basses, you could change them once every 25 days. You know what the best sounding basses are? They're the ones you just put on last week. I play without nails and these basses respond well to a no-nails technique. I use these with the D'addario composite 3rd string (the cafe-con-leche color) and Oasis titanium trebles for a colorful normal tension set that has very good intonation and playability up through the first fourteen frets (about as high as I ever play).

p.s. Ignore any warnings about the fragility of these strings in the string-set write-up. Those pertain to the trebles only. These basses are very durable.
