Aquila Rayon Basses 800 Classical Guitar Strings 161C, LT Bass Set

The best modern version of the wound silk basses for the historical guitar – but not only!

As it is well known, guitar basses before 1950 used silk cores instead of Nylon cores. The sound produced by this type of strings is very interesting and differs significantly from the typical low strings made from multifilament Nylon cores. However, the use of silk, which is a natural material, involves problems such as the risk of not having perfect intonation, instability due to changes in humidity, and finally a tendency to string breakages. During our tests on innovative materials, we came across a special monofilament called ‘Rayon’ which has the same acoustic properties as silk, but without the natural irregularities and tendency to breakages, that make silk basses so delicate. The balance between metal and core is such that it recreates exactly the typical sound of silk.

Aquila Rayon Basses 800

I've used the Aquila "Nylgut" bass strings for a few years and recently gave these "Rayon" basses a try. They feel and play very similar but the sound is different. The Rayon basses have a very neutral and very fundamental bass sound that I would describe as more of a bass thud with very little midrange compared to the Nylgut basses that have more midrange and therefore seem louder. I tried them on a few guitars and preferred the Nylgut basses, but I then put them on a Cordoba C9 cedar top that surprisingly has a clear and bright sound, and the Rayon basses sounded better on that guitar. I tune to 423Hz, so these might get better results tuned to 440 and they do have slightly less tension than the NT Nylgut basses.

Excellent Unique Basses

Of the several varieties of bass strings I have tried, these are the most unique and interesting set. They have a very broken in sound with strong fundamental and avoid the “clangy” metallic overtones of many bass sets. Tuning is good and the feel is comfortable and soft and vibrato is easy. They seem to last quite a while as well. I will probably continue trying other bass strings from time to time, but these have become my preferred bass string regardless of which trebles they are parties with and I don’t see that changing. They seem to sound quite different to any other string available.
