I hadn't used medium D'Addario Chromes in a long time, and I just put on a set after trying (but failing) to like .013 roundwounds on the ES-175. It just wasn't happening, mostly due to the finger noise.

My last couple flatwound sets before that have been La Bella's, and they have been been hit and miss.

So this time I went back to what I consider the "reference set" for flatwounds -- D'Addario Chromes.

They sound great. I get that "woody" tone I'm looking for from the lower three strings, and the low E — the hardest string to get right — is not too boomy, and not dead.

The wound G is a nice string. Punchy but not too ... punchy, and it'll only get better as I play it in. The higher two strings are just like those in any modern set -- perfect plain steel.

Maybe Chromes are considered boring — they're not pure nickel or made in Europe — but this is a very nice sounding string set, and I appreciate the price and consistency that D'Addario offers.
