Whenever I put a new set of John Pearse 80/20s on my Taylor 214CE, I like to use a brass-plated version of the first and second steel strings. Brass-coated/plated steel strings seems to sound rounder, they're less susceptible to corrosion (notice how easily your finger slides up and down brass-plated steel strings) and if for no other reason, they look incredibly cool. Buying two singles with every set might be a little more expensive, but I don't care. StringsByMail makes it very easy to order exactly what I need.

Simply put, I really like brass-plated TI singles and also the similarly brass-plated DR Xenon singles. I haven't yet noticed any difference (yet) between the two brands, but if I uncover one I’ll report back.
