Strings for Oud

Aquila needs to pay attention to details

This package of strings I received suffered horribly from mislabeling. The tuning on the label outside of the packaging was different the the labeling on each individual packet of strings as some were labeled for Turkish tuning, not Arabic.

Also, while I appreciate Aquila's innovation for string material, having one set of strings in the middle of your instrument a completely different color than the rest just looks odd.

These complaints are all issues with details and while they don't take away from the quality of the strings and the sound, they are, to me, issues nonetheless with the strings.

Aquila 130 Arabic 11 string set for oud (light tension)

After waiting a little over ten days for the new strings to settle in... I can say that overall I am deeply impressed by how much warmer and fuller the sound is on the Turkish 'oud I play. At first I was a little off put by the Red colour of the wound lower register strings..the the two upper register strings were immediately warm.... the G string is still settling in . All the strings sound full and resonant now. This is my second set of Aquila strings and they could not have arrived sooner.

Q: Hello, please advise what color is the dd string in this set for the currents sets you have? is it silver wounded or red/brownish nylon material?

A: Hello Sameer,
The dd string in these sets is silver wound although I believe Aquila may call it "grey wound metal blend".

Q: Are these the "new" aquila strings (all red with plain 3rd course) or the "old" ones (1st and 2nd white nylgut and 3rd-6th red wound)?

A: Hello Mo,
Yes, these are all red with the unwound 3rd. The 3rd while technically a "Red" series string is actually more brownish than the 1st and 2nd.
