One of those rare "Oh wow!" sets
Review by WDH on 25 May 2025 review stating One of those rare "Oh wow!" sets I have used GHS strings over the years now and again but I decided to take a look at what they offered that might work on my new Cordoba Stage Hybrid Nylon string guitar. This was one of those sets that, as soon as you bring them to pitch, you know you have something special under your fingers. Without me sounding too over the top, these strings were EXACTLY what I was looking for to complement the Cordoba.
I like a moderately stiff string on a low action guitar. The tension on these is perfect: enough resistance to not squirm around and enough play to allow you to work the string a bit. Intonation is great, with chords ringing out beautifully. As mentioned by someone else here, these strings play in to solid pitch amazingly well. I have never had a nylon string set stay in tune so quickly as these Doyle Dykes do, rivaling what I would expect on a mid- jazz steel set.
I went through a number of both US and foreign makers trying to find a good fit with the Cordoba; lots of pretty good, but nothing that talked to me like this one. Who knew I just needed to look to Michigan to find what I was looking for? I'm going back in my account and ordering three or four more sets now.
Every player is different but I have played professionally for over 50 years, still out there playing solo, where every note counts. I am in love with these and can't think of anything I could offer to improve them. Beautiful bass chime, and the nylon tops are the perfect match for the bottom sound. . . a joy to play.
Do yourself a favor and get a set or two. Now the only thing I have to worry about is GHS changing something or discontinuing the line. If I hear that, I'm backing up the truck.
