I wanted something different for my cheapo Ibanez ABG...
Review by Adam H. on 4 Jun 2018 review stating I wanted something different for my cheapo Ibanez ABG... So, I was completely bored/disappointed with my Ibanez ABG. 4 string, 32" scale.
I stripped and oiled the neck, thinned (not scalloped) the bracing. I pulled the frets and glued in strips of maple veneer, then sanded and re-radiused the fingerboard. Then I hand carved a new bone nut and saddle. Restrung with Rotosound bronze 45-105. Couldn't even get close on the intonation.
I shaped a piece of bone saddle blank with the contour of the top of the bridge, then glued it to the back of the saddle. This moved the break point back by 1/8th inch (3mm). Still VERY sharp.
So I got to thinking. To improve the intonation I needed a lighter, more flexible string.
So, I thought about ordering some cheapo Upright Bass strings and shortening them. Just couldn't justify spending what, $80+ for Thomastik-Infield stings. Somehow, I ended up in the classical guitar section, and saw "ContrabassGuitar" Huh? What the hell is that? That's when I found these.
How do they sound? Warmer than ANY bass string I've tried before (and that's a lot o strings!).
Not dark, like some flats, just warm. Plenty of bass, clear mids, and present, but transparent highs. Very musical, without the nasally-clangy, super bright typical ABG sound.
Wonderful sounding, warm, present, clear, and nice bloom. Did I mention, these sound great?
On top of that, tension is very manageable, lower than the typical 45-105 strings.
They are also very supple. As someone used to steel core strings, the flexibility is amazing. On top of all that, these strings are quite soft. Silver plated copper. Very easy on fret work. I left the rosewood fingerboard bare, and these strings have hardly left a mark.
So I ordered 3 more sets!
Bottom line, these strings are wonderful. Perfect for anyone who is looking for something different for their bass. Something to note, these fit my bass with a 32" scale. They might fit a 30", but you'll likely end up with wrapped string around the tuner post. They are too short for 34"., but they do have a string for 34" (860mm).
One other thing of note, these are NOT ball end strings. Luckily, my bridge is string through, similar to a classical guitar bridge. If your bass uses bridge pins, you'll have to get creative. Perhaps something like those bridge beads, and then string thru the bridge from inside the body.
Otherwise, wonderful strings. I don't know why these aren't in with the acoustic bass strings!
