You want to sound like Tal Farlow?
Review by M B. on 9 Aug 2020 review stating You want to sound like Tal Farlow? Then, these are the strings you want to try.
I've swung between Thomastik and D'Addario flatwounds for my Eastman archtop; sometimes preferring the darker sound of D'Addarios and other times enjoying the sparkle of Thomastik flats. But THESE are the strings I've been looking for. At last!
The Optima tone is somewhat dark, but at the same time spunky and punchy with a vibe that harkens back to the bebop jazz guitar sound of the 50s.
The winding is not completely flat but very slightly ridged, like Thomastik flats, so there's that detail to think about if you are used to the perfect dead quiet smoothness of other flatwound brands. But for comping, vintage chord melody and single string soloing tone these are exceptional. Thank you John and Matt at SBM for making these superior Optima Jazz Swing strings available.
