If you're looking for an alternative to pure nickel strings, try the Pyramid Monel Classics. They're made by wrapping Monel wire around a steel core, a traditional manufacturing technique. The Pyramid Monel Classics produce a "Vintage bright" tone that places them between nickel-plated steel and pure nickel strings.

Caution: Be careful cutting these wound strings to the desired length. Before you cut, make a sharp bend into the string. This fixes the nickel wrap wire, which otherwise gets loose and leaves you with a dead string.

Great new Pyramid strings

Threw these on my 1997 Fender Lone Star strat. Excellent sounding strings. Warm and balanced, no ice picky highs. Refined and rich, not harsh and boomy like cheaper strings. Worth the extra dough. Slight drop in volume on wound strings, hardly noticeable with the right adjustments in pickup height. A worthwhile investment.
