A: Not all dulcimers are strung up with the double string as the first strings. Sometimes, they are actually
strung as 4 separate strings. If you have the same gauge on the top two strings, they usually can only be tuned
very close to one another, if not in unison. When they are different gauges, you can tune them as much as a fifth apart.
This is very interesting when you want a following harmony on the second string [strung together or separately].

when the dulcimer is strung as 4 separate strings, it means you can play on one and have the other as a following harmony, a unison note, or be left open as a drone.
