Q: I have a Takamine C132S. It has regular D'Addario strings. For a while now I have been playing the guitar tuned an entire step lower, to invoke the warmth and intimacy of old-pitch instruments. I am also attempting to play the Bach cello suites from the original bass clef score, and it is a revelation. A guitarist friend (a professional musician- out of town) has also been experimenting with similar effects, and he recently installed a set of the Savarez wound trebles, also tuned down, and says the effect is amazing. I worry about high-tension vs low tension on my instrument, though it doesn't seem like low-tension wound trebles exist, though guitar blogs say low-tension strings are more suitable for the softness and warmth associated with the music of Bach. (I love the sound of a lute, by the way.) Would the tension be eased some if these are installed tuned a whole step lower? I usually play solo, so tuning to other 440 instruments is not an issue. Thoughts? Thanks for any feedback!
