D'Addario EJ47 80/20 Bronze Wound Guitar Strings BNN-3B, Bass Set

Basses are clearer now on my cedar top classical that gets used for classical, jazz and blues, solo and duet with a steel string.

These strings have a great deal more power than normal strings. Although the package says "medium" they are fairly high tension due to the materials (my guess) but are great to give any guitar a bit more umph. I also love the tone on my Smallman which can sound a little harsh with most other basses when they're new.

I wear out the bass strings of my classical guitar fast. I used to replace them every two weeks because I play the bass lines along with the chords for fast/strong-beat Latin tunes. I had purchased strings from a variety of manufactures and all of them were silver wound. They weren't durable for my playing style.
I emailed Strings By Mail, because I have decided to try bronze, or brass/copper strings.
Fortunately Matt, from Strings By Mail, found a good choice for my bass strings.
I needed the following (normal medium/tension) classical guitar strings:
1. D - 4th - .029 (0.737mm)
2. A - 5th - .035 (0.889mm)
3. E - 6th - .043 (1.092mm)
Matt recommended the D'Addario Pro Arté J47 series, nylon core, normal tension 80/20 bronze wound strings. They feel like the strings I used to have on my guitar when I was learning to play with my father more than fifty years ago. They sound more "classical" than other bass strings sold today.
It's good to know that there is a store where I can get the specific materials and types of strings that I need, and the gauges that I normally use. It's also good to be able to purchase single strings since not all of them wear always at the same rate.

These strings are bright and yet warm. Good intonation and durability. Definitely the best strings for the money.

I'm just a blues player who plays classical nylon string guitar. If you want a really nice oldtime blues bass string sound check out these 80/20 bronze normal tension bass sets. They are very very responsive. Probably not so good if you are playing loud for a crowd unamplified. But really amazing in all their complexities. Certainly wouldn't recomend them for classical or jazz or samba, but really very fine for blues. Can't say the same thing for the trebles, but if you like to play that old blues, the normal 80/20 bass set j47 is a great foundation.
